REAPER METAL ALL STARS [7″/Digital Download]
Written by Marc C. Pietrek 2017
Heavy metal is not just a form of music. It is a family that is unlike any other in the music world. There is nothing out of the ordinary when metal brethren come to the aid of one of their own when it concerns that persons health and well-being. Such is the case with (vocalist) Steve Grimmett of post-N.W.O.B.H.M band, GRIM REAPER. Steve was on tour with GRIM REAPER in South America recently when tragedy reared its’ disgusting mug. An infection caused him to undergo several surgeries that have subsequently left him with an amputated leg just below the knee. A few in the metal community will be collaborating together in hopes of making a huge dent in the steep medical costs that Steve has incurred.
The name of the project is REAPER METAL ALL STARS and a three-song 7″/digital download is currently in the works. The songs chosen are the GRIM REPAER tracks “See You In Hell”, “Fear No Evil” and “The Show Must Go On”. A virtual who’s who of N.W.O.B.H.M./thrash metal are already penciled in to play on the project. Here is a list of just some of the participants:
Chuck Billy [TestAmenT], Gary Holt [eXodus/SLAYER], Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth [OVERKILL], Glenn Drover [ex- MEGADETH], Tony Dolan and Mantas [VENOM, INC.], Neil Turbin [DEATHRIDERS, ex- ANTHRAX], Doro Pesch, Lips [Anvil], Ross the Boss [MANOWAR], John Gallagher [RAVEN] and last but most certainly not least, (friend of VITRIOL, INC. / A DARK UNITED FRONT) Joe Cangelosi [UNCIVIL WAR, BROOKLYN MILLITIA, ex- ELIMINATE, ex- WHIPLASH, ex- KREATOR, ex- MASSACERE].
I communicated briefly with Joe via text on 2/14/2017 and could sense how much it means to him to be included in this noble cause. The night before he posted the following comment on Facebook: “…I am honored to have been chosen to be a part of this All Star Relief for Steve Grimmett and I hope everyone can spread the word and raise some funds for his cause”.
Heavy riffs, scorching leads, epic drum solos, falsetto vocals, and from-the-depth-of-Hell bass lines are all interwoven threads that help make heavy metal the greatest form of music on the planet. However, as important as those threads are, there is a thread that is stronger than all of them put together. That thread is the bond that metal’s musicians share with one another in both times of bliss AND darkness. People often say that when things are at their worst, you can always count on your family. I have a sneaking suspicion that Mr. Grimmett is pretty proud of his right about now. Cheers, ya rivet-heads!!
