James Murphy

James Murphy (DEATH, OBITUARY, CANCER, DISINCARNATE, TESTAMENT, etc.) Interview 09/13/2016

Written by Marc C. Pietrek 2016

When it comes to death metal icons, James Murphy is without question certainly in the conversation. After having learned basic guitar fundamentals at school in West Germany in the early 1980s (his father was both U.S. Navy AND U.S. Army), he soon became an avid fan of guitarists Randy Rhoads and Alex Lifeson amongst many others. He was inspired enough to make playing the guitar his life and his livelihood, which is now spanning four decades.  His resume in the death metal music genre, beginning with DEATH ‘Spiritual Healing’, is one for the ages. Who could or would even deny the man’s contributions on albums such as OBITUARY ‘Cause of Death’, DISINCARNATE ‘Dreams of the Carrion Kind’ and CANCER ‘Death Shall Rise’. And let’s not discount his efforts with thrash metal giants, TESTAMENT. ‘Low’, ‘Live At the Fillmore’ and ‘The Gathering’. Stepping in the shoes of Alex Skolnick is no easy task, and he more than held his own, making many fans of his playing along the way.

On 09/13/2016, James was kind enough give up some of his time during a recording session at his own and operated Safehouse Producton (https://www.facebook.com/safehouseproduction/)I conducted an interview via telephone with him for my Facebook music fan page, A DARK UNITED FRONT (see YouTube link below). During our conversation, we talked about his early musical influences, his time and work spent in some of the most revered bands in death and thrash metal history, his equipment and his feelings about artists ultra-reliance on audio recording software amongst other topics. We even discussed a little about firearms and some of their issues in the U.S.A. Plus, he also divulged the details of a meeting of an encounter he had with Alex Skolnick shortly after replacing him in TESTAMENT that some may find very interesting.

I grew up in northern California during the 1980s and have been an AVID heavy metal fan since 1982. Having experienced the Bay Area thrash metal scene first hand, thrash metal will always be at my core, However, I am also a huge fan of death metal, doom metal, traditional heavy metal, stoner rock/metal and old-school black metal. If it concerns any of those sub-genres, (to borrow a quote from Christopher Walken in 'THE KING OF NEW YORK') "I want in on it!!". Cheers, ya rivet-heads!!
