BAND FEATURE: MEMORIAM
Written By Marc C. Pietrek 2017
Former BOLT THROWER vocalist, Karl Willetts, admits that the band had already run its creative course at the time their drummer, Martin “Kiddie” Kearns had sadly passed away in September, 2015. Overwhelmed with grief and sorrow over his former band mates death, it actually became the catalyst for him getting some old mates together to assemble a new death metal battalion. The focus would be create new music reminiscent of good ol’ late 80s/early 90s British death metal. He recruited bassist Frank Healy (BENEDICTION, SACRILEGE), drummer Andy Whale (ex-BOLT THROWER) and guitarist Scott Fairfax (BENEDICTION, LIFE DENIED). These old-school British death metal leathernecks have released ‘For the Fallen’ (2017 NUCLEAR BLAST), an album that I can picture becoming a future genre classic. One worthy to be on any bookshelf/LP record-holder with an EARACHE RECORDS sticker slapped on the side of it.
First off, the riffing laid down by Scott Fairfax is kah-rah-shiiiiing!! Think Zakk Wylde playing death metal minus the soloing. Ten-ton hammer riffing all the way around combined with one hell of a monster slaying guitar tone. Seriously brutal shit.
Then there the torpedo onslaught of the rhythm section of Frank Healy and Andy Whale. They zero in on a lot of old-school mid temp death metal grooves (a la BOLT THROWER and OBITUARY) that can listen to for hours on end. They also spit-fire some cool sounding crust punk inspired stuff. A very formidable battleship anchor for the band mos def.
Finally, you have one of the most respected vocalists in the history of death metal, Karl Willetts. Though he is longer in the tooth and may not have the vocal power he had back in the day, he still possesses an unmistakable death metal growl and roar. He is still pouring his heart and soul into his stories about war and what all makes it what it is. Major rager props to him for always staying true to his war-themed lyrics instead of going the way Satanic and/or horror themed ones. He actually even goes in a political direction on one song, directing vitriol towards Donald Trump and BREXIT.
