BAND FEATURE: DEMONBREED (Germany)

[Marc C. Pietrek filed the following report for VITRIOLINC, INC / A DARK UNITED FRONT (www.vitriolinc.com) on 10/32/2017] One of the most endearing qualities that myself and many metal fans have embraced over the decades is a band that wears it’s influences on its sleeves. We will not chastise bands for using the same blueprints of those who pioneered the different genres that make metal what it is today. That is the reason why, when you pick up a metal CD or LP (in many instances), you will often see a sticker on it that reads, “For fans of…” If the band brings it one hundred and ten percent, sounding locked-in and tight from the first note, we will not view the band sounding like another band(s) as a negative.

Example A: ‘Restless and Wild’, by ACCEPT. Besides “Fast As A Shark” (one of the very first, if not the first, thrash metal anthems), that album is mostly outright JUDAS PRIEST worship. Does that keep it from being revered as one of the seminal albums in all extreme metal (for the time)? Fuck no!! Example B: I dare any true metalhead to tell me that PORTRAIT (Sweden) does not kick some serious ass while sounding (almost spot-on) like the original MERCYFUL FATE!! Sure, we may joke about it, but that is a part of the humor we share together as fans. It will not stop us from buying a band’s albums and/or paying to see them live. Like the molding process used for aging beef at a top-notch New York City steakhouse, it just adds to metal’s collective flavor. Those who cannot get past this are overly proud metal elitist douchebags and their opinions do not mean shit as far as I am concerned.

That brings me to death metal marauders DEMONBREED, from Marburg an der Lahn, Germany. Formed in 2015, DEMONBREED (Jost Kleinert – vocals, Daniel Jakobi – guitar, Fernando Thielmann – guitar, Johannes Pitz- bass, Timo Claas – drums) came about after the breakup of LAY DOWN ROTTEN, who had been active for sixteen years. Kleinert, Jakobi, Pitz and Claas (all ex- LAY DOWN ROTTEN) decided to carry on and enlisted Thiemann (MILKING THE GOATMACHINE) to complete the unit. After putting out the independent ‘A Thousand Suns Will Rise’ demo and the ‘Rupture the Coven’ 7” vinyl split-single with The DEAD GOATS [TESTIMONY RECORDS], they released the graveyard waking, catacomb shaking ‘Where Gods Come To Die’ album [TESTIMONY RECORDS] in July, 2016.

Like both GATECREEPER (Tempe/Tucson, Arizona) and SENTINENT HORROR (Woodland Park, New Jersey), DEMONBREED’s sound is submerged in the classic sound of late eighties, early nineties Swedish death metal ala ENTOMBED, GRAVE and DISMEMBER. Many refer to it nowadays as the “HM-2” sound. They have absorbed those influences like a surgical sponge wiping up the blood on the floor of a Chicago-area hospital trauma operating room. Add in some BOLT THROWER, MORBID ANGEL and BENEDICTION, and you have one hell of a bludgeoning metallic concoction!! The band features vocals that you can actually understand, and the drums are changed up in striking fashion. However, when it comes down to the nitty gritty of it all, it is about the riffs and they are like a chainsaw fragmenting bone matter. Brutally unforgiving!!

I grew up in northern California during the 1980s and have been an AVID heavy metal fan since 1982. Having experienced the Bay Area thrash metal scene first hand, thrash metal will always be at my core, However, I am also a huge fan of death metal, doom metal, traditional heavy metal, stoner rock/metal and old-school black metal. If it concerns any of those sub-genres, (to borrow a quote from Christopher Walken in ‘THE KING OF NEW YORK’) “I want in on it!!”. Cheers, ya rivet-heads!!
